As promised in a recent statement by The Governor, HE Gordon Wetherell, the Disaster Recovery Board has approved the award of nine contracts to Turks and Caicos Islands-based construction companies to rebuild specific buildings in Grand Turk. The contracts are part of the 5 million British Pounds promised by the UK government last October for hurricane relief to the Turks and Caicos. While the money has been available for some time, the Governor accredited the delay in distributing the funds to “the lack of systems and processes in place to provide the transparency and accountability.”
In keeping with his commitment to transparency, the Governor has released the individual contract figures as tendered/agreed:
The tendering process, which was opened on Friday 10th July at 10 am, lasted 3 days. According to the Governor, the Committee evaluated all tender bids against various criteria. Subsequently project proposals were presented to the Disaster and Recovery Board for Approval. Members of the Board are Governor Gordon Wetherell, the Premier Honourable Galmo Williams, Pastor Vernon Malcolm, Honourable Arthur Robinson and Clive Stanbrook. Further to the above list, a further three invitations to tender went out to all pre-qualified contractors on Monday, July 20 for projects to construct pumping stations in Grand Turk and South Caicos. Further projects relating to 36 buildings are awaiting Bills of Quantities from BCQS, the firm commissioned by the Recovery Task Force. Those 36 projects include shelters and schools across the Turks and Caicos Islands. There are: Two (2) in Salt Cay Caicos, four (4) in Middle Caicos, four (4) in South Caicos, six (6) in North Caicos, twelve (12) on Providenciales and eight (8) in Grand Turk.
