| Joint effort saves historic Sapodilla Hill inscriptions |

Historic stones bearing inscriptions dating back to 1767 have been cast or moved into safekeeping through a joint effort of government, volunteers and business. “For centuries, passengers and crew members passed the hours spent waiting for their ships to load and unload in Sapodilla Bay by carving inscriptions into the soft rocks on top of the hill,” the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources said. “The inscriptions include the names of many of the most prominent families in the TCI as well as dates and images of houses and ships. “The increase in population and visitation on Provo has resulted in theft and vandalism on Sapodilla Hill to the point where it is apparent that the inscriptions will all be stolen or destroyed if left unprotected.” With the help of AND Construction and the TCI Environmental Club, the National Trust and DECR on Dec. 11 moved all the loose stones, from which replicas will be made and returned to the site. Molds were also made of the inscriptions in bedrock that cannot be moved to preserve them. The next step is to place signs at the site for visitors and to create walkways to encourage visitors not to walk on the inscriptions.

TCI Protected Areas Series
