The Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police Force and the Tourist Board joined together for a one day workshop which focused on the impact of the police in the country’s tourism industry and how to improve customer service. Blythe Clare and Dara Thomas, both from the Tourist Board headed the training-workshop at the Police Station Conference Room, along Airport Road in Providenciales on Wednesday, November 11th, 2009.

Under the programme TIDES which stands for Together Individuals Delivering Excellent Service, the workshop focused specifically on customer service, behavioural training and improving tourism knowledge to make the Police Force better service ambassadors.

“We are a tourism destination. Police officers do come in contact with many visitors, they have to resolve complaints and of course when visitors have issues they do use the services of the Police. So, we were delighted to come down and provide the necessary information about the destination and also about customer service”, Ms. Blythe Clare, Training Manager explained.

“We gave them (Police) information on how best they can serve the general public”, Ms. Clare expounded.

Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force Training Officer Sgt. Odessa Adams said, “I believe the training was very helpful for our offices. It opened their eyes to the importance of customer service in the Turks and Caicos.”

Among the topics covered were How to provide quality service, How to interact with visitors, Moments of Truth, Magical Moments, Miserable Moments and Ordinary Moments.

Participants were also quizzed on “How well do you know the Turks & Caicos Islands?” Also, the seminar discussed ways to develop interactive alliances between the travel and law enforcement industries, as well as the police’s positive and negative impact on tourism. “The officers now have a better understanding of how their attitude can affect the tourism industry,” Adams said.

The Tourist Board pointed out during the training, flash-points between the police and the tourism industry as a whole, which are inclined towards the organization’s mission.

Adams also said this training was part of many trainings currently being offered to the local force. “The training department is working hard to make sure officers are well trained,” Adams explained. Trainings that have recently been offered include Leadership, Customer Service, Etiquette, Professional Standards and starting next week the officers will be trained on “How to ensure a successful prosecution.”
