Hot on the trail of thieves looking to make off with stolen goods, the Royal Turks and Caicos Island Police caught a Turks and Caicos Islander red handed as he was in the process of trying to burglarize the Goldsmith located in Central Square Providenciales. According to police, they were acting on a tip and they arrested the individual with a number of tools commonly used to commit burglaries in his possession.
This arrest is just one of several credited to the work of the local police force in the past few weeks. Police Liaison Officer, Calvin Chase says the island has been experiencing an increase in burglaries, which is common at this time of the year. “An upsurge in crime is always expected around the holiday time,” Chase said. However, burglars should beware, because the local police force is not going to give way to their crimes. Chase says, the Police are aware of this pattern and therefore have put a number of measures in place to prevent crimes from happening. Although in order to avoid compromising their efforts he was not able to say exactly what they are doing, he said one measure should be obvious to everyone. “We are doing what we call, High Visibility Policing. This means you will see a lot more officers on the street.” The police say they have revised their patrol patterns and increased the tension to areas that have been affected by Burglaries. “Crimes have been spread across the island, but Leeward Palms has seen an unusual increase compared to other areas,” Chase explained. The Grace Bay area is always high on the priority list for officers, due to its value to the country as a tourist destination. The Police have not only had success apprehending the criminals, but also recovering stolen goods. Last week the police executed several search warrants at homes in both the Lower Bight and Leeward Palms areas of Providenciales, recovering a great deal of items which have been reported missing. “We have been successful recovering many stolen items and are requesting any persons whose premises has been burglarized to visit C.I.D at The Providenciales Police Station in a hope of identifying any of the recovered goods.” Chase says the police will continue to strengthen their approach over the upcoming days and weeks. “Our objectives are to take these criminals off the streets and make the residents and visitors of Turks and Caicos Islands safer.”
