TCI gets ready for kiteboard contest
Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:42

Hardly a day goes by in the TCI when you don’t see a colorful kite gliding across the waters, but these are no ordinary kites.

The warm breezes, calm waters and miles of beaches make the Turks and Caicos Islands the perfect location for kiteboarding.

On Sunday, May 9, the shores of Long Bay Beach will be filled with kiteboarders competing in the 4th annual 2010 Windvibes Kiteboarding Tournament.

Kiteboarding is a surface water sport that uses the wind to pull a rider through the water on a small surfboard or a kiteboard (similar to a wakeboard), combined with the power of a large controllable kite to propel the rider and the board across the water. These large kites ranging anywhere from 9 square meters to 18 square meters.

Although kiteboarding has been around for more than a decade, it has gained significant popularity in the past few years, especially in the TCI.

Twenty-four local kiteboarders have already signed up for the exciting event, where they will go head to head in a variety of different disciplines. Events during the tournament will include Course Racing, Jumping, Speed and Freestyle.

Spectators are welcome and will even have the chance to be a part of the action. This year’s events will include a special Kiteboarders vs. Spectators tug-of-war. Shade tents will be provided on the beach for spectators, and cold drinks and BBQ will be available throughout the day. Admission is free.

The day’s festivities kick off at 9 a.m. with the finals starting around 2 p.m. Bring the kids and enjoy a day at the beach, check out the wind and feel the vibes.
