Police unit aims to improve case management PDF Print E-mail

The police are taking radical steps to improve their capability and the standard of the evidence and the case files that they present to the Attorney General’s Chambers and to the courts, said Police Assistant Commissioner Dave Ryder.

“Having taken over the responsibility for Uniform Operations almost 12 months ago now, it was clear that there are a range of structural changes that I needed to make to modernise and improve our performance in key areas,” Ryder said.

The Case File Quality Assurance Unit was created earlier this year and is led by Inspector Daniel Miller, who has a wealth of investigative experience and knowledge in such matters, Ryder said. Miller is closely supported by Sgt. Terrence Thomas, who performs a role in monitoring and tracking case files.

This unit has ensured significant improvement in the quality of case files, the evidence presented to the Attorney General’s Chambers

and in the investigation of crimes, Ryder said.

The unit’s duties include:

  • Monitoring the standard and ensuring quality in case files for court and tracking case files effectively
  • Giving directions and providing on-the-job development for constables in case file preparation, often on a one to one basis
  • Advising sergeants and constables
  • Liaising with crown prosecutors
  • Advising operational officers on correct evidential procedures
  • Reviewing progress with shift sergeants on a regular basis
  • Helping constables develop good investigative skills

“We believe that the work of the unit will serve officers and the courts well in presenting the best possible evidence  for consideration, and most importantly, the work of the unit will ensure that we fulfill our duty to the public and the community at large,” Miller said. “You deserve the best service, and that is what we aim for.’

Ryder said other changes to improve service to the community and the courts include those to Neighbourhood and Community Policing, Patrol Response Policing and the Tactical Unit.

Once the Case File Quality Assurance Unit is fully tested, it will be extended to Grand Turk.

“It is one thing arresting a suspect, but it is another matter to continue investigating thoroughly and then  presenting the best evidence for the court to make its decision upon and we are committed to doing that,” one officer said.
