Achieving her childhood dream, Miss Andrenique Ewing, sponsored by Island Elements, captured the crown as Miss Regatta 2010-2011 at the 43rd Annual South Caicos Regatta on May 28.

“I feel really great about wining the title of Miss Regatta 2010-2011 because I always wanted to enter a pageant, and most especially for the reason that my mother Miss Vinette Harvey was crowned in 1985 as Miss Regatta 1985-1986,” Andrenique Ewing told the fp.

South Caicos native Andrenique, who was vying for the title along with three other beauties — Daisey Handfield, Daphny Pierre and Islande Santivill — wowed the judges with her poise and personality. She said she was very honoured to win the title and will take advantage of the opportunity to represent her country well.

“Now that I am the reigning queen, I am going to carry out my duties with great pride and get involved with projects that will be beneficial to the youth of my country, as it has always been my belief that the youth are the key to a brighter future,” says Andrenique.

The Miss Regatta contest is a highlight of the weekend long homecoming event on the island, affectionately known as the “Big South.”

A highly anticipated tradition each year, the South Caicos Regatta is aimed at bringing locals back to the island and highlighting its traditions for tourists. The regatta has been held for more than 40 years, and locals say it is a tradition they will continue for generations.

Although rain did shower some of the events, it did not dampen the spirits of those attending. During Friday night’s performances, people danced in the rain, not letting rain water down their enthusiasm.

Saturday morning kicked off with a traditional Junkanoo. School children dressed in costume participated alongside the band, which was a treat for the eyes and ears.

As is tradition, there were two boat races Saturday, the 85 and 200. In the 85, Ron Hall won the race, beating out “Bookie,” who landed in second place. Mervin Cox raced ahead of Carl Simmons for the win in the 200 race.

The event was considered a success by organizers, who enjoyed all the attention paid to South during the festivities. Many local sponsors also helped to make it a success including Saunders & Co., LIME, Projetech, TCHTA and Digicel.
