Police might finally get to move out of their tiny condemned headquarters and into the Myrtle Rigby Health Complex under one proposal for the facilities freed up with the opening of the new hospital.
Permanent Secretary for Health and Human Services Judith Campbell confirmed that the option is one of many on the table for the complex on Leeward Highway. Her department had proposed turning the complex into a hospice or long term care facility for AIDS and end-stage cancer patients, as well as a mental health and psychiatric care section. “There are a lot of people who have needs,” Campbell said. “All options are being considered.” The police have needed a new facility for many years, since the dilapidated police station on Old Airport Road was condemned several years ago. With police being an obvious priority, Campbell says she is glad to relent her plans to the needs of the police. “If it means upgrading the police force, even though I know a long-term care facility is needed, we have to prioritize,” she said. The suggestion on the table at present it to create a centralized response centre in the former medical facility on Leeward Highway that would house the police, fire department and 911. Campbell said this move would make sense because it would put police in close proximity to the hospital and court facilities in a centralized location with ample parking. While she says it appears they are leaning toward the police-911-fire plan, no final decision has been made as of yet. Campbell said whatever the ultimate fate of the complex is, the public lab facilities located there currently used for things such as blood work for work permits and testing of food for contamination would remain in the complex. The centre did undergo some cosmetic repairs last fall after tenders were invited in September to refurbish the complex, including installation of hurricane shutters and repairs to the roof. However, no matter what is decided for the future of Myrtle Rigby, renovations will be required to accommodate any new tenants. With the current financial crunch the country is under, this could mean it will be a while before the complex will be occupied by any new departments.
