When someone says they have a “pain in the neck,” odds are Dr. Craig Zavitz knows why. According to Zavitz, research has shown that more than 85 percent of headaches have their origin in the neck. “Migraines, tension headaches and even vertigo can all have their origins in the neck,” says Zavitz, who has recently joined Dr. Sam Slattery’s successful practice at Inter Island Medical Services in the Neptune Court, as only the second chiropractor on island. ![]() Zavitz is a graduate of the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) and member of the Canadian Chiropractic Association, the Ontario Chiropractic Association, Niagara Chiropractic Society, and the CMCC Governor’s Club. After 32 years in practice in Niagara near Toronto, he decided to take his years of experience and unique healing techniques and share them with the residents of the TCI. Along with the traditional chiropractic care for conditions such as back and neck pain, whiplash, headaches, carpal tunnel, shoulder and hip bursitis, tennis and golfer’s elbow and various sports injuries, Zavitz is bringing along some more high-tech treatments, including laser. “I have had good results with conditions that no other treatment could help,” he says of his Therapeutic Laser Technology. According to Zavitz, Theralase Therapeutic Laser Treatments provide patients with a safe, effective and painless therapy that uses the body’s own natural healing systems to relieve pain, increase joint mobility, increase tissue integrity and promote cell regeneration. Therapeutic lasers work by supplying energy to the body in the form of billions of photons of light. The body absorbs this laser light on a cellular level and transforms it into chemical energy, which the body then uses to commence its own tissue repairs. The biostimulating effect of laser therapy causes a decrease in inflammation and pain and an increase in tissue regeneration and healing. “Most patients experience noticeable relief in only four to six treatments,” he said. Laser therapy can be used to treat everything from sciatica and diabetic ulcers to shingles. Laser acupuncture is also used to assist people to quit smoking in only one 45-minute session with an 85 percent success rate. It is especially effective in treating new injuries such as sprains and muscle injuries, he said. Laser reduces pain quickly and cuts the healing time in half in most cases, getting the person back to work or back in the game quickly. Making the decision to start seeing a chiropractor can be daunting for some, says Zavitz, as they often worry about starting down a long road of treatment. “People can come as much or as little as they want,” says Zavitz, who was inspired to become a chiropractor at the age of 15, when he suffered from debilitating back pain that forced him to drop out of sports. “My dad took me to a chiropractor, and he helped me so much, I knew it was my calling.” Appointments can be made with Zavitz during his monthly visits to the TCI. His office will be open one week per month in the Neptune Court beside Graceway Gourmet in Grace Bay. |
