Thanks to funds from the Caribbean Development Bank, plans are now moving forward for the much needed expansion and renovation of the government’s clinic in Conch Bar in Middle Caicos.

The plan, which is part of the Health Care Renewal System, will include a larger waiting area for patients, expanded treatment and consultation rooms and new overnight stay rooms, including maternity facilities, according to the Ministry of Health.

Last week, officials from the Ministry together with a representative of the CDB finalised architectural drawings for the new facility.

“The Middle Caicos Clinic Project is one that has been on the drawing board for sometime now, and I am extremely delighted to see that we have reached this stage in its development where we will soon be ready to send it out to tender,” said Director of Health Services Dr. Rufus Ewing.

Ewing added that the upgrading of some of the existing island clinics and the development of new clinic facilities on some islands is critical to the delivery of comprehensive primary health care services in those islands and reducing the need for expensive secondary and tertiary care services.

The news comes two months after the opening of the TCI Hospital with locations on Providenciales and Grand Turk.

South Caicos received an upgraded to its clinic in 2007 and according to Permanent Secretary of Health and Human Services Judith Campbell, Salt Cay is budgeted to get a makeover this year.

While work was recently undertaken on the North Caicos clinic, they were mainly cosmetic repairs paid for by the U.K. Hurricane Ike recovery fund. The North Caicos clinic requires an almost complete tear down and overhaul, according to Campbell, which looks like it will only come in next year’s budget.
