Halfway between the Empowerment Training held in June and the First Sitting in the House of Parliament to be held in August, elected representatives of the Youth Parliament are spending summer break preparing for the exciting event to come.

The group is spending the summer months focusing on furthering their knowledge on debate issues like development, education, security, stability, gender and youth, international relations and media.

According to Director of Youth Affairs Angela Musgrove, the youth parliamentarians are earnestly preparing themselves — with guidance from the department — on different current issues and how to tackle them.

“The TCI Youth Parliament allows the opportunity for an open and informed debate on issues facing the country’s society,” she said. “The foundation of this group focuses on the governance in the Turks and Caicos and youth’s awareness education and training in the norms of politics and democracy in the country.”

Other helpers on hand to train the young individuals were Sophia Grice (Toastmasters) on Public Speaking, Blair Sessions (AG Chambers) about Bill Formulation, Dudley Been (Office of Consultative Forum) regarding Parliamentary Roles and Procedures, and Rachel Taylor (Enid Capron Primary School) on Community Service.

The feedback from the meetings was highly positive, especially encouraging since this was the participants’ first experience with parliament training. Many said it was exactly the kind of support they needed.

Thus far, the youth leaders have had additional assistance on handling strategies and working together to expand in their capacities as parliamentarians.
