| Lionfish hunters take on invaders |

 Intrepid hunters on Provo, Grand Turk, Salt Cay and South Caicos managed in one day to bag 207 of the beautiful but invasive fish that eats every fish in its path, damaging the ecosytem and endangering our precious coral reefs. The Lionfish Hunt, hosted by the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources, was aimed at raising awareness of the danger the lionfish presents while showing that the first are easily caught and quite edible. Between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. July 24, an Oasis Divers team on Grand Turk hunted down 57 lionfish, collecting the $600 first prize on the capital island. On Providenciales, a Provo Turtle Divers team won first prize for bagging 50 of the spiny fish. The DECR has been very active over the past year trying to engage commercial fisherman as well as the community in helping fight these predators. Starting in October, the DECR began a campaign to encourage local restaurants to put lionfish on their menus. The first step is to dispel the myths about lionfish and show people they are tasty and safe to eat. A year-long Lionfish Tournament that began in October is offering one fisherman a grand prize award of $3,000 for being the first to record 3,000 lionfish catches. TCI Protected Areas Series
