Acting on a request from the Integrity Commission, the governor’s Advisory Council voted to require its members and those of the Consultative Forum to file declarations of their income, assets and liabilities to the commission.

Members of both the council and the forum were not included in the original long list of person’s in public life who must file the declarations (see the list below).

Also at its Aug. 18 meeting, the council agreed to create a tribunal of three persons, as opposed to the current requirement of one, to conduct investigations into the removal of a member of the commission.

The council also approved proposals from the Financial Services Commission for outstanding Financial Service Regulations. These include provision for financial penalties in respect of disciplinary offences under Section 45 of the Ordinance; regulations to clearly distinguish between the regulatory and administrative arms of the commission; and an amendment to the trustees regulations to show the change in responsibility from the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, to the Commission.

The council received a presentation from Chairman of the Turks and Caicos National Museum Dr. Donald Keith on challenges to the preservation of TCl’s archaeological and cultural heritage.

The council underlined the importance of ensuring that the TCI heritage is preserved and respected, and agreed that applications to work in this area should conform to UNESCO standards and internationally accepted best practice.

The council also approved the release of budgeted funds for the Customs Department to acquire and roll out the upgraded web-based version of the ASYCUDA customs clearance system, which should make it easier for importers to handle clearance procedures.

Members also bid farewell to Attorney General Kurt de Freitas, who was attending his final meeting of the council. He announced earlier this year that he would not seek a third three-year term and will be replaced by Huw Shepheard in September.
