The Turks and Caicos Islands join the Caribbean Community and the Pan American Health Organization in celebrating Caribbean Wellness Day on Saturday, Sept. 11, under the theme “Love that Body!”

The Ministry of Health and Human Services in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Board, InterHealth Canada Ltd., International Partners (Redbridge and Broward Health), local businesses, non-governmental organizations, and government ministries and departments planned a week of festivities throughout the islands leading up to Caribbean Wellness Day.

These include public service announcements to promote healthy lifestyles; “Take a Fruit to Work/School Day;” 2.5K Walk/Run/Cycle events; and to culminate the week of activities, “Healthy Village” Health Fairs offering free health screenings, healthy cooking demonstrations, farmers markets, activities for the whole family and much more.

Here are some actions you can take to promote health and wellness and “Love that Body:”

  • Increase your fruit and vegetable intake.
  • Get physically active (walk, ride a bike, swim, etc.) for 30-60 minutes on most days.
  • Read food labels consciously — know what you are eating.
  • Don’t skip meals. Eat three adequate meals a day.
  • Reduce your portion size.
  • Limit alcohol intake to less than two alcoholic drinks a day.
  • Quit smoking.

The decision to observe Caribbean Wellness Day was taken by CARICOM heads of government in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on Sept. 15, 2007.

They met to discuss the physical, economic and social burdens caused by lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, stroke, heart disease and cancer.

Caribbean Wellness Day was introduced in September 2008 to stop the epidemic of Chronic Non-communicable Diseases and has been celebrated annually every second Saturday in September.
