![]() Leadership of the People’s Democratic Movement called on the media, local and international, to spread the message they are prepared to do whatever necessary to return democracy to the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands. On Tuesday, Sept. 21, just one day after U.K. Foreign Minister Henry Bellingham announced the delay of democratic elections, members of the party’s National General Council (NGC) met in an emergency meeting to discuss how the party would and be moving forward. Leader Douglas Parnell told members of the media the NGC gave him the authority, “to take all steps it deems necessary to return power to the people to the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands, including aligning with organizations or groups to achieve these objectives.” “Today we are here to make sure you understand as far as this situation is concerned, that there is no more Mr. Nice guy,” Parnell said. “This is a matter for the people, and we are going to ask our people to come together in such a way that is 10 times greater than what you saw on Unity day. We are going to ask our people to come together in such a way that it is crystal clear we want our country back and we want our country back now.” Deputy Leader Clarence Selver added, “We are not going to sit idly by and let them do it without protesting and taking it to the limit.” But he cautioned that while they intend to go as far as necessary, it should be done responsibly. “This is a very serious time in our country,” Parnell said, “a time that requires people to act, and we want to encourage our people to act responsibly, to act in accordance with the law, to make sure that we do not create more uncertainty and more chaos than is already there. We must act and show ourselves and the rest of the world that we can act responsibly and civilly, and that we must do that first.” Parnell explained there are ways to demonstrate to protest and speak out, but speaking out sometimes does not mean you have to speak. “It could mean you just have to stand to carry a placard to walk, to encourage others,” he said. “We have to have a country after this is all over, and so we must make sure our country that we love, that I love, that you love remains intact.” Click HERE to read Parnell's response to Bellingham's announcement that elections would not be held in July 2011.
