Pistols, flare guns, a shotgun and a rifle have been turned in to police so far in the program that grants anyone amnesty for turning in illegal weapons before tough new laws go into effect Dec. 1. “Hand in your firearms and ammunition before we get you,” said Assistant Superintendent Kenny Grant. “We will not rest until we take as many firearms as possible off the street, and you with them if you break those laws.” “We emphasise that the amnesty is in place, and while we remind the public that they only have until the Tuesday, Nov. 30, to hand firearms and ammunition in, some still choose not to, as our seizures of firearms and arrests have shown in the last 14 days,” Grant said. “Unfortunately, those persons, if and when convicted, after the new sentencing rules come in at the end of this month, will receive at least five years in prison when they could have handed their firearms in and walked away. It is a choice that they made, but one which they will surely regret.” Weapons handed in so far include a .32-caliber pistol, a rifle, a .25-caliber pistol, a 12-gauge shotgun with ammunition and a number of 6 flare guns and other pieces of ammunition. Among the weapons seized during some of the arrests are a .380-caliber pistol, a .38-caliber pistol and other weapons which are now subject of court cases, police said. Individuals wanting to surrender firearms should contact one of the locations listed below to make arrangements for a suitable time and manner in which to hand over the weapon or ammunition. They should ensure that the weapon is not openly displayed; and where possible is carried in a secure container.
