Excerpts from CXC top student Rashunda Campbell’s speech PDF Print E-mail

It is an honor and a privilege to stand before you today as a product of the Raymond Gardiner High and also as the top CXC student of the Turks and Caicos Islands. First of all I would like to thank the Almighty God for bringing me to this time in my life, it’s not my might or power that had made me a conqueror but it was the Lord’s.

Today sums up many hours of hard work on my part but I can not stand here and tell you that I would have been here without the input and support and instruction of many people in my life.

Today is one of the happiest days in my life. Less than three months ago when I was awaiting my results I never dreamt that I would be standing here today as the top national CXC student of the TCI. From that moment on in my life I was saying and doing things that I couldn’t explain, life couldn’t get better. As the days went by I thought how did I do it? What did I do to get me this far? Why was it me?

Then I remember the scripture that says “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” I remembered the nights I left school, the mornings I went to bed, the breakfast I never had all because of determination. I was determined to excel, determined that I would do my best and have no doubts or say to myself you could have done better. I felt satisfied with what I had obtained. It’s not because I got the top but because I know I could not have done any more at that time and I felt great at the end, even though it’s just the beginning for me as I plan on having many days like this, with God’s help.

I plan to continue my studies in the pediatric field. My dreams and aspirations are to become a pediatrician and to open up my own day care center on the different islands. I believe that I can make a difference but first we must start with the youths of this country. Helping them and giving them the opportunity to excel to the best of their ability will result in a brighter future for our country at large. We are living witnesses that there are children who really want to make a difference so it’s now up to us, you and me to make it happen.

We have done excellent and made ourselves and the country proud and I congratulate you on your accomplishments. The results were great but I urge you to challenge yourselves in the years following to do even better. We have to keep on striving for the best, don’t give up now. This was just a mile stone in our lives so let’s not stop here. We hear this saying over and over, this is just the beginning - so let’s not let our success end here, but follow us where ever we launch off to study.

I say congratulations to all of you my year’s batch mates. We are from all over these islands and we can impact all over these islands as long as we take this as a beginning and determine within ourselves to work hard and take seriously our role as nation builders and nation changers.

In closing, if you haven’t remembered anything that I’ve said remember this, that we started as children and sit here now as adults. The world saw war, the school saw conflict, but we came together as a class as neighbours, ultimately as friends. So never settle for less when you know you are the best. Remember, no one can determine your destiny only you can.
