Model sailboat race seeks sponsors PDF Print E-mail

Captains get ready — the Valentines Day Cup Model Sailboat Race is just one month away, and this year more sponsors are needed to put wind in this traditional event’s sails.

More than a decade-long tradition, the Middle Caicos event is a highlight for not only the island but the entire community of the Turks and Caicos Islands. This year the Middle Caicos Sailing Association is reaching out for sponsors to replenish the fleet of model sailboats used for the annual race day and for teaching events.

“We fervently hope you will help preserve this traditional sport,” organizer Sara Kaufman said.

Currently, the fleet consists of only 14 boats. Over the years, nearly 100 boats have been carved, all being raced, sold and/or donated to the MCSA. But since they are well loved and well used, wear and tear eventually takes its toll.

Kaufman says the fleet is in dire need of refurbishment because many of the older boats can simply no longer be repaired. The local gum-elemi wood is used for carving the boats, and although some boats have survived many years, many of the model sailboats are ready to be permanently drydocked.

The MCSA is calling on companies, organizations, families and individuals to purchase a boat for the MCSA fleet. Sponsorship includes naming the boat, choice of paint colours (i.e., to match any corporate colours) and a certificate from the boat carver, donation certificate and mention of the donation in all event press releases will follow.

For the race event, the donator’s chosen captain will sail the boat, or a captain will be found for you.

“It is an excellent opportunity to raise your local visibility and to assist with our cultural heritage preservation efforts,” Kaufman said. “This is the largest annual community event held on North and Middle Caicos and well worthy of your support.”

Boats are available in sizes from 24-48 inches at price levels of $250, $350, $500 and $750. This year both the hand-carved gum-elemi models or the hand built pine plank models are being offered for sale.

The event will be held on Bambarra Beach, starting with a captains’ meeting at high noon. There will be a cookout with Church of God of Prophecy, music and dancing all afternoon.
