 The Grace Bay Resort Foundation continues to inspire others to get involved in the local community, starting the year off with a generous donation by a local resident. A homeowner at the Grace Bay Club who asked to remain anonymous has donated a Jeep Cherokee to the foundation to be used by their two adopted school on North Caicos. The vehicle will be used to transport students when they are travelling around the island to participate in sporting events, as well as for teachers who travel to and from the various schools for meetings or training. Manager for Talent Growth and Local Affairs Dr. Carlton Mills explained that while the Jeep will be shared by the Adelaide Oemler Primary School in Bottle Creek and the Charles Hubert James Primary School in Kew for educational purposes, it will also benefit the students of the Raymond Gardiner Robinson High School. Teachers offer extra preparation courses for the CXE exams, but some students are not able to attend. “It is our understanding that because of lack of transportation, children have had problems attending these classes,” Mills explained. He says the Jeep will be made available to transport those students to ensure everyone has the chance to excel. The Grace Bay Resort Foundation has also committed to pay for the insurance, licensing and maintenance of the vehicle. In 2010 the foundation donated a number of resources and time to helping the schools on North and South Caicos. For 2011, it is starting a new program in hopes of expanding its commitment and involving more guests in the program. “When guests book rooms in the resorts, they can also book trips to the sister islands in order to visit the adopted schools and experience the history and culture,” Mills says. The foundation plans to hold these trips at least twice a month for resort guests. “They can make donations to the schools such as books to improve the school libraries, visit historic sites on the islands such as Wade’s Green and the farms on North Caicos,” he said. The highlight of the visit will be having lunch in a local home “so they can connect with the local communities,” Mills said.
