 Since earning her associate degree at the Turks and Caicos Community College, Krystal Malcolm has been on the fast track to making a name for herself in the most important industry in the country — hospitality. Not only has she completed three college degrees and gathered several years of hospitality experience, Krystal is hoping to be an inspiration to a whole new generation of Turks and Caicos Islanders. Krystal, a Clement Howell High School graduate, completed her two years of study in hospitality in 2006 at the community college and went on to Johnson & Wales University to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management. Her first priority was getting a job in the TCI, which she accomplished as a Human Resources Assistant at the Grace Bay Club. While she enjoyed the role, Krystal said she still had further goals she wanted to achieve. In September 2008, with the help of her parents, she left GBC and the TCI for the University of Leeds in the U.K. She graduated one year later with an Master of Arts in International Business Law, a dream she had long pursued. Krystal says she was blessed when she returned to be received with welcome arms by the GBR family and her previous post at the Human Resources Assistant, “a position which I loved and enjoyed with a passion,” she says. Today Krystal is working in the Reservations Department as a Reservations Agent. “I enjoy being the first contact for our guests and also generating revenue for the Grace Bay Club,” she explains. Throughout her career Krystal says she has also been blessed with the support of Dr. Carlton Mills, Talent Manager for GBR. “The thing I admired most about Krystal is her enthusiasm about law, and it encouraged me that she never lost sight of that dream,” Mills said of the young Turks and Caicos Islander. Krystal is hoping to combine her two interests in a new and up-and-coming field of hospitality law. Mills said he admired her foresight and believes she is someone who other youth can follow. Mills says Krystal is a star talent at GBR and a role model for other youth because she is young, enthusiastic and has a positive attitude. “Young people today need to know if they dedicate themselves and work hard, they will be rewarded,” he said. Krystal wants to encourage others to partake in the most important industry in the TCI. “There is an inadequate number of Turks Islanders to fill management rolls in the hospitality industry on island,” she said. “By partaking in this industry, you can make a valuable contribution to your country.” Krystal credits her hard work, focus and dedication to her success, as well as the great start she received right here in the TCI. “I would like to encourage all Turks and Caicos Islands to attend the Community College. It is a good opportunity to stay on island and earn your associate degree.” “I am where I am today because I am driven, I obtained my degree, I am open to new ideas and challenges, I took good advice from others, I remained dedicated to the Grace Bay Club and most of all, I am here today by God’s grace.” Krystal says she hopes she can be an inspiration to others, and at 24 she is only just getting started. In the next five years she hopes to complete her master’s in International Business Law, be promoted within the Grace Bay Resorts organization as well as own her own company, and become a successful business woman.
