![]() Brought to you by Scotiabank Electric lighting burns up to 25 percent of the average home energy budget. This is one area in your home you can easily save big. In recent years, Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFL) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs have revolutionized energy-efficient lighting. With an average of approximately 30 light fixtures per household, replacing or starting out with the right bulbs, can switch on your monthly savings to the tune of over $100. CFLs are simply miniature versions of full-sized fluorescents. They screw into standard lamp sockets, and give off light that looks just like the common incandescent bulbs - not like the fluorescent lighting we associate with factories and schools. LEDs are small, solid light bulbs which are extremely energy-efficient. New LED bulbs are grouped in clusters with diffuser lenses which have broadened the applications for LED use in the home. ![]() While both types of bulbs cost more than the average incandescent bulb, electricity used over the lifetime of a single incandescent bulb costs at least 10 times the original purchase price of the bulb itself. Energy efficient bulbs also have a longer lifespan than an incandescent bulb. The average incandescent bulb lasts around 1,000 hours, the average CFL up to 6000 and an LED can last up to 8,000 hours. That can save you hundreds of dollars over the life of a CFL or LED bulb. Not only do LED and CFL bulbs use about 75 percent less energy than standard incandescent bulbs, these energy friendly bulbs produce about 75 percent less heat, so they’re safer to operate and can also cut energy costs associated with home cooling. In addition, the energy efficient bulbs offer environmental benefits, with saved energy comes a smaller need for fossil fuels and less waste. So, by saving energy over the life of the energy-efficient light bulb you also help save and protect the environment. In order to change all the bulbs in your household to the easily available CFL bulbs, it will only cost you just over $100 (depending on the size of your home of course). Your monthly savings will easily make it worth your while.
