Mechanical failure of one power generating engine at the Turks and Caicos Utilities power station on Grand Turk caused a fire and power outages in the nation’s capital on Saturday, Feb. 19. A connecting rod on one engine broke, causing a fire and damaging an adjacent engine, said TCU General Manager John Channer. The Fire Department had the fire under control in about 90 minutes, Channer said. Damage to the building where the fire occurred is being assessed. The utility was able to start up other generators and return power to half the island by 3:30 p.m. and to the whole island by 9:30 p.m., Channer said. “We’re holding our own,” Channer said, though at reduced reserve power generating capacity. Customers with generators have been showing “great cooperation” with the utility to help manage electricity loads, he said.
