Ona Glinton students set to return PDF Print E-mail

Students of the Ona Glinton Primary school on Grand Turk who were displaced when fire destroyed parts of their buildings in November last year are about to return to their familiar environment.

The fire which destroyed nine classrooms forced the establishment of a shift system at the Eliza Simons Primary in order to accommodate the students from the Ona Glinton.

The Ministry of Education now says that repairs to the classrooms that were not destroyed by the fire are in their final stages, and it expects the electricity to the buildings will be restored by Friday, Feb. 25. After that, the shift system at Eliza Simons will be terminated, allowing it to return to its usual hours, while the students of Ona Glinton return to their premises.

However, the ministry said there will be a reduced number of classrooms at Ona Glinton, and it will therefore have to introduce and operate a limited shift system at the school in order to accommodate all students.

“Getting teachers and students back in their familiar environment has been an ongoing priority for the Ministry and Department of Education, as we recognized the kind of impact the displacement could have had on students’ performance,” said Dr. Beatrice Fulford, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Education.

“Grade 6 students will be particularly pleased given that they are expected to take the National Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) in May. They will now benefit from the required number of hours per week, and extra classes that could not have been effectively delivered on weekdays under the arrangements of the shift system.

“Additionally, relocating students to the Ona Glinton Primary School campus allows the Eliza Simons Primary School body to return to their regular school hours and, similarly, teachers will have the facilities to offer extra classes, if necessary, after school is dismissed.”
