News Briefs: Forum to meet with FCO team PDF  | Print |  E-mail

The Consultative Forum will meet May 17 with members of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office who will be here next week to hold consultations on proposed changes to the Constitution, said government CEO Mark Capes.

The forum hasn’t met in public since January, although it has met in private several times since then.

The last scheduled meeting was April 5 to discuss the new government budget, but that was cancelled by Chairwoman Lillian Missick when six members said they needed more time to review the proposed budget.

Asked about the lack of meetings, Capes said the forum meets depending on the matters sent to them for consideration.

“There’s no real reason I can think of other than that,” Capes said.

Attorney General’s staff beefed up, more to be hired

The Attorney General’s office has gotten much needed support in addressing serious staffing shortages, says Attorney General Huw Shepheard.

“We recruited three more staff at the beginning of this year, and they’re all in post and doing a very good job,” Shepheard said.

“I’m still looking for one or two more members of staff, but we have identified some people who we could take on, and we’re in negotiation with them at the moment.”

Improvements in funding, staffing and offices for the Attorney General were approved by the interim government last year.

New Tourism Authority set for autumn pending funds

The launch of a new Tourism Authority to market the Turks and Caicos Islands is still awaiting proper funding but could begin before the year is out, said acting Gov. Mark Capes

“Funding is the issue that prevents us moving straight into the Tourism Authority,” he said. “We’re aiming to achieve that hopefully by autumn.”

A Tourism Working Group has recommended that a new authority take over most of the functions of the existing Tourist Board, whose budget and staff have been sharply reduced.

Capes commended the board’s performance in its new form.

“I must say it’s doing an excellent job. It’s a bit leaner than it was, it’s costing us less, but it’s doing nonetheless a very good job.”
