Race for the Conch 2011
Thursday, 19 May 2011 09:31

Still floating from last year’s success, the organizers of the annual Race for the Conch EcoSeaSwim are getting ready for another exciting competition.

Set for July 9 on Grace Bay in front of Flamingo Café, this year’s race is shaping up to be a swimming success.

The one-mile and 2.4-mile events will bring in several elite swimmers, including last year’s champion Marcus Diaz, who will be back to defend his title. But the races are open to all swimmers who want to challenge themselves in our beautiful turquoise waters.

If you are not swimming, you can enjoy the event as a spectator, cheering on the swimmers as they race along the shore.

Top swimmers will receive the coveted “Race for the Conch” trophies, as well as for youngest and oldest swimmer.

A special trophy will be awarded for the winner of the “Resorts Cup,” which will recognize the top hotel/restaurant team in the race.

All swim participants will be eligible for prizes to be drawn at the awards ceremony at Flamingo Cafe 7-8 p.m. with a beach party to follow.

Chloe Zimmermann from Marco Travel, director of the Eco-SeaSwim, is also organizing travel packages for those wishing to come to the TCI to participate in this exciting sporting event.

Last year’s triumphant inagural event saw 77 swimmers finishing the race ranging in times from 22 minutes to 1 hour 4 minutes.

One of the highlights of the race was seeing 13-year-old Isla McLeod come in as the top woman’s swimmer and fifth overall.

Taking home the prized conch trophy was Marcos Diaz from the Dominican Republic, an international open water racing star and Olympic favorite. Marcos said he loved swimming through the clear water and seeing all the sea life, just what the organizers were hoping to achieve.

“We really wanted this race to be inclusive and show off Grace Bay as a real treasure for swimmers,” Zimmerman said. “And I think we succeeded because swimmers and spectators alike really enjoyed themselves.”
