Damian Roderic “Ric” Todd, a career diplomat with a strong financial background, has been named governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Todd is currently Her Majesty’s ambassador to Poland and regional director of the Central Europe Network, but he also has had postings in South Africa, Czechoslovakia, Germany and Slovakia, but never in the Caribbean or in overseas territories.

“I am delighted to be appointed governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands, which is not only a fascinating new job but also different from postings I have done before,” Todd said. “I am looking forward to getting to know the people of the islands and working with them on all the issues which we face.”

Foreign Minister Henry Bellingham praised Todd’s abilities, which he said are right for the TCI at this time.

“He’s one of the star diplomats in the entire foreign office,” Bellingham said. “I was determined to send to the Turks and Caicos Islands a governor of very, very high caliber who combined a) experience in running a big mission … and b) someone who has serious financial experience.”

“I think he’s an ideal person to send to the Turk and Caicos Islands, and I think it shows just how seriously we take this position, and I’m confident he’s going to be able to be part of delivering a great future for the TCI.”

Todd will be taking over when His Excellency the Gov. Gordon Wetherell leaves his post at the end of August after serving three years, the standard length of appointments for governors of overseas territories.

Todd studied history at university and joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1980. In addition to diplomatic postings, he has worked in various jobs in the FCO in London, including three years on the FCO Board as finance director and five years in Her Majesty’s Treasury.

Todd is married and has three children.
