![]() The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police say that the unoccupied Old Main Station on Airport Road was burglarized some time June 6-7, and two handguns, 14 rounds of ammunition and some cash were stolen. Police officers were moved to stations in Chalk Sound and Five Cays on May 31, but the property room remained in the old condemned building, containing other exhibits, drugs and more money. Police said nothing else was taken. Commissioner Colin Farquhar ordered all remaining exhibits moved to the secure facilities at the Chalk Sound. “We thought we had the necessary systems and procedures in place to prevent this from happening,” Deputy Commissioner Brad Sullivan explained. “What I was told was left there and what was left there were two different things. … What we thought was already moved was not moved.” “The exhibit custodian and a senior member of the RTCI Police have been provided operational guidance,” police said in an official statement. “Further, an inspector has been named to ensure that enhanced procedures are in place, including seized money being placed in a trust account at the local bank and other standard police operating procedures established.” “Police are aware of the rumours of an ‘inside job’ as the thieves were very selective of the items taken,” police said. “Many members of the RTCI Police have expressed their concern in this lapse of security because it is not simply an embarrassment to the commissioner but to the police service as a whole.” The investigation is continuing, and police are asking anyone with information about the burglary to contact the police or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477). More cops on the street The commissioner has announced that he is deploying a second officer to Salt Cay and to Middles Caicos beginning Sept. 1. Security also has been enhanced at the Providenciales International Airport with additional uniform and plain clothes officers, he said. The commissioner also has established a two-person Cold Case Unit to work full-time on the unsolved homicides. Police ranks will soon get another boost when 19 cadets are expected to graduate Aug. 18 from the Police Training School on Grand Turk. Eight officers will be posted to beat and patrol on Grand Turk, and eleven will be posted to beat and patrol on Providenciales. Promotions, appointments Police announced that five police constables have been promoted from the rank of constable to sergeant: Malcolm Smith, Allan Scipio, Rohan Ash, Robin Williams and Kemron Lowhar. Sergeants Shawn Billingy and Calvin Chase have been transferred to the rank of acting inspectors. Billings will be staff officer to the Commissioner Colin Farquhar, and Chase will be staff officer to the Deputy Commissioner Brad Sullivan. Constable Dwayne Baker has been transferred to acting sergeant as the staff officer to Assistant Commissioner Dave Ryder. Constable Brandi Swann-Selver has been transferred to acting sergeant as part of the Professional Integrity Unit. “Acting appointments are not a designation of a permanent promotion to the rank, and acting appointments can be made for a variety of reasons,” police said. “Acting appointments, at all ranks, may be temporary appointments for particular assignments and to evaluate the police officer at the higher rank.”
