North Caicos: People make it beautiful PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 14 July 2011 09:46

Deserted soft sand beaches and calm clear waters, rich vegetation and vibrantly coloured flowers, and the smiles and warm hearts of the people are the most inspiring things you will find in North Caicos.

Yvette and Maxwell Handfield are just one of the many traditional and loving families who work to thrive in their home of North Caicos. With their four sons — Desmond, Darville, Dedrick and Delvado — they have built a variety of family businesses you can’t miss when touring the “green” island.

The family runs a grocery/variety store, a restaurant, an electric shop, a liquor store and a fishing/sporting goods shop, while the fourth son is still away at college.

MY Dee’s Mini Mall is a major landmark right along the main highway, which passes through nearly the entire length of the 41-square-mile island. It is the center of the Handfield family businesses. It is also the home of MY Dee’s Restaurant and Bar, a quaint spot to enjoy local and international cuisine.

MY Dee’s is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner with brunch on Sundays. If feeling like a local is something you seek, then don’t miss MY Dee’s Ribs ’n’ Chicken BBQ every Friday night. The party starts at 5:30 p.m. and carries into the night, in fact there is no posted closing time, just “’til you say when.”

But it is not just the food that makes MY Dee’s Restaurant a special place. While snacking on some of the most mouth-watering cracked conch, you might see the next generation of MY Dee’s giggling and cooing in the corner.

Maxwell and Yvette have raised their four D’s to appreciate their home of North Caicos. While they were all educated away from the TCI, the sons have been encouraged to return to North Caicos and help the island grow and prosper. So far, their parents’ wishes have become a successful reality.

Kamron is just eight months old and already he is a part of the family business. He spends his days watching customers come and go at his parent’s electric shop, right next door to the restaurant. The son of Desmond and Merrica, Kamron is learning that family is what it is all about. Desmond and Merrica run both the restaurant and the island’s only electric shop.

Uncle Dedrick often stops in to say hello. He is not far away, running a one-stop sporting shop also located in the plaza.

Maxwell and Yvette have certainly made an impact in their home of North Caicos through their wide variety of businesses. But it is the connection they have inspired their children to have with the island and each other that is most impressive.

When travelling around North Caicos, the vibrant green and blue colours will catch your eye, but it will surly be the people that will make you smile.
