Digicel marks 5 years in TCI with celebration
Thursday, 14 July 2011 09:54

Digicel celebrated its 5th anniversary in style July 9 with hundreds turning out for the cultural and fashion extravaganza.

Music and excitement could be heard from miles away as Digicel transformed the Children’s Park in the Lower Bight into a family party playhouse. Children enjoyed a Digicel bouncy castle and water waterslide, while adults listen to live music and tasted treats from several of the vibrant cultures represented in the Turks and Caicos.

Jamaica, Haiti and even as far away as the Philippines showcased flavors and cultural items from their home countries, alongside an impressive stand of Turks and Caicos Islands cultural heritage.

The Soroptomist Club sold traditional food items such as Salt Cay candy, potato bread, conch stew, fried plantain and many other delicious TCI dishes. The National Trust also had a lovely display of national treasures such as hand weaved baskets and hats and wooden sloops.

The day’s festivities also included Digicel giveaways with several guests winning prizes such as BlackBerry handsets.

Cultural Director David Bowen told a traditional fable sharing TCI’s cultural heritage with guests big and small who gathered round to hear his tale.

But no one could deny the highlight of the day’s event was a fashion show that featured several TCI designers and performers.

Kazz Forbes, Raynelis Howell and Jermell Williams wowed crowds with their impressive fashion collections. The show kicked off with original designs from each artist using Digicel as their theme and followed with original collections debuting in the TCI.

Forbes kicked off the fashion with his black and white Le Caicos Chic Collection, which received rave reviews when he took part in Caribbean International Fashion Week in New York City last month. Howell, TCI’s 2010 Designer of the year, impressed with her designs as did Williams, whose models were cheered with great enthusiasm as they took to the Digicel runway. Artist Justice also outfitted the ladies with originally designed handbags.

In between runway shows, local performers entertained the massive crowd, including Digicel’s own ‘Mike Dizzo.’

The show ended best for Shalawn Delancy, who was awarded a cheque for $5,000 right on the spot for signing up during the event for post-paid Digicel service.
