TCI attends Caribbean health conference PDF Print E-mail

The Ministry of Health and Human Services represented the Turk and Caicos Islands at the First Annual Caribbean Region “Triangulating on Health Equity” Conference that took place in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on July 21-22.

The conference’s main purpose was to identify and disseminate regional health care models which focus on social determinants, public/community health and primary care. The group focused on best practices and positive outcomes in health from Caribbean regions and communities representing the Caribbean Diaspora in the United States.

The assembly welcomed approximately 75 community leaders, scholars, and practitioners from around the Caribbean. Dr. Rufus Ewing, director of Health Services and chief medical officer, and Dr. Jamillah Berry, health planner, discussed the TCI Model for Health Care Renewal including successes, challenges and lesson learned as well as future plans to strengthen health regulation, primary care and health promotion initiatives.

Dr. Terese Maitland, chief of the National Epidemiology and Research Unit, with Imterniza McCartney, health educator, presented on the TCI Multidisciplinary Model for Cholera Preparedness Surveillance carried out in collaboration with the Pan American Health Organization, U.K. Department for International Development and Caribbean Epidemiology Centre to support the development and implementation of health promotion, prevention, detection, treatment and control measures.

Additional TCI representatives included Nutritionist Lakeisha Gardiner-Wilson, Health Research Officer Shenika Handfield and Romell Phillips, Morehouse School of Medicine Master of Public Health Intern from South Caicos.
