Enid Capron Primary and Clement Howell High got a special treat this week when a group of highly enthusiastic volunteers from the Sandals Foundation, a philanthropic branch of Beaches Resorts, hosted a mega post-hurricane cleanup at the two schools.

After Hurricane Irene blew through the islands Aug. 23-24, both schools suffered extensive damages to the interior and exterior of their buildings, including playgrounds and lunch areas. The foundation quickly stepped in to lend a hand with the cleanup efforts and to help prepare the schools for the 2011-12 school year.

“This year we needed the extra help to in getting the school ready for the new term, and the team of volunteers made it happen for us,” said Enid Capron Headmistress Rachel Taylor. “We are really grateful.”

Clement Howell Principal Lloyd Fearon was also thankful for the foundation’s help.

“Normally the repairs and renovations of the school are done by the government (Engineering and Maintenance Services) Department, but the damages caused by Hurricane Irene have added to their workload,” Fearon said. “We are really delighted that the Sandals Foundation volunteers were able to come to the school to help.”

In additional to the post-hurricane cleanup, the foundation drafted a 12-month curriculum aimed at enhancing both schools. The foundation will also open a sick bay at Clement Howell later this month giving the public school its very first Nurse Station. Similar initiatives will be introduced to the Enid Capron early next year.

The charitable organization inducted both the Clement Howell and Enid Capron into their Caribbean-wide school adoption program with plans for upgrading their facility while engaging, encouraging and empowering their students.

Across the Caribbean the Sandals Foundation has adopted a total of 27 schools.
