“More bags means more books. More books means more work to do. So you don’t have any excuse.”

That’s what Principal Dara Thomas told more than 500 students in her Ianthe Pratt Primary School on Sept. 6 as they began their day with a welcoming treat from a dozen staff from Grace Bay Resorts (GBR).

“Our foundation is committed to education in the Turks and Caicos Islands,” Dr. Carlton Mills, GBR talent manager, told the students. The company’s foundation has adopted five schools across the TCI, including Ianthe Pratt in the Bight on Providenciales.

More than a dozen GBR employees handed out brand new backpacks to each and every student in the school.

“Students, we’re only asking you to do one thing,” Mills said. “And that is to work hard. Study. If you want to move the country forward, education is the process in which you’re going to be able to do it.”

In addition to the school supplies, foundation representatives and Thomas unveiled a new school sign that was donated by the group.

Representatives from the foundation visited all five adopted schools this week, handing out back-to-school supplies to the students. The group visited North Caicos on Sept. 7 and was greeted by enthusiastic students who graciously accepted the gifts.

Students from both the Charles Hubert James Primary School and Adelaide Oemler Primary School on North Caicos were thrilled not only with the gifts, but the visit from the guests.

Friday offers an extra special treat when the team heads to the Big South, where Mills will lead the team to the school he attended as a boy.
“I think (the inspiration for this effort) has been the employees, who many of whom have gone through the schools themselves and wanted to give back,” Mills explained.

Last year the GBR Foundation donated a remarkable $100,000 to local schools and offered several scholarships for local students to attend the TCI Community College. It has also been active in all of its properties, giving opportunities for local students to serve internships during their vacations, gaining experience in the country’s number one industry — tourism.
