![]() Providenciales celebrated 10 seasons of hockey this weekend, marked not only by the kick-off of the new 2011-12 season but with a party to honour the sport and its founders in the Turks and Caicos Islands. For nearly a decade, youngsters from every part of the community have come together to enjoy the sport of hockey. Not something one might expect in the Caribbean, but thanks to many dedicated hockey lovers, business owners and community supporters, the 10-year-old Provo Hockey League (PHL) keeps on scoring with local youth. “This is a very proud moment for me,” a visibly moved Doug Camozzi told the young players and their families in attendance at the celebration Oct. 29. Camozzi was one of the founders of the PHL along with Steve Greenwood and others who were also present to share in the excitement. What started in 2001 with just 26 players in sneakers hitting a ball around on the tennis court at the Third Turtle Inn today is a league with three divisions, nine teams and nearly 80 players strong. “This has been an incredible ride for me, my family, my boys,” Camozzi said. The PHL not only brought the sport of hockey to hundreds of youth in the TCI, it also brought a new form of entertainment to the island. After their initial beginnings in Turtle Cove, it was when Clive Stanbrook and other community supports decided to build the Graceway Sports Center that the PHL was born. “At the end of the first season we told people to get ready, the PHL was coming,” Camozzi said. In the fall of 2002, the PHL came to life, thanks to a lot of personal dedication and a significant financial commitment from Camozzi. The league has certainly grown and changed during its decade in existence, as have the facilities. Over the years, dedicated individuals and parents have given of their time to improve the rink inside the Graceway Sports Center, adding higher walls and nets to block pucks from flying into the crowd. “At those first games, the parents were having to duck and getting hit by pucks flying into the stands,” Camozzi remembers with fondness. The PHL has also grown in its effect on the lives of children who are growing up with the league. Today three prior players are participating in AA and AAA teams in the U.S. and Canada. “We even have one child being looked at by the NHL,” Camozzi says proudly. The PHL is made possible because of tremendous support from local businesses whose sponsorship of the teams help cover the large costs involved in equipment needed to play the sport. Camozzi also says it is the dedication of so many people and parents who make hockey playing dreams possible for so many local youth.
