More than 500 volleyball enthusiastic tourists are scheduled to arrive this weekend to participate in the biggest ever GObeachfest form Nov. 6-13. The annual event held at the Club Med on Grace Bay brings tourists from across the world to the Turks and Caicos Islands to learn, play and enjoy the sport of volleyball. The guests participate in tournaments and are trained by 15 professional beach volleyball players from the United States, including three Olympic players. Organizer Albert Hannemann, a beach volleyball professional (Association of Volleyball Professionals), has been coming to the TCI for 18 years. Three years ago he decided to bring his love of the sport and his love for the TCI together when he brought GOBeachfest to the TCI. The 2009 inaugural GObeachfest was such a success, Hannemann decided to make it an annual event. The week-long event brings together like minded individuals who love the sport of volleyball and like to have lots of fun. GObeachfest past events have featured pros and gold medalists such as Kerri Walsh, Phil Dalhausser, Sean Rosenthal, Elaine Youngs and Eric Fonoimoana. Participants learn new volleyball skills and workouts, play with Olympians and medalists, compete in daily tournaments and participate in daily clinics taught by the many pro coaches. There are also nutritional seminars, pro-am games and pro exhibitions, theme parties, live entertainment and gourmet dining. It is an all-inclusive volleyball vacation of a lifetime. Hannemann says he is happy to bring an event to the TCI that has a large economic impact on tourism. He puts a lot of effort into promoting the event and the TCI, marketing it year round throughout the U.S., Canada and even Europe at various volleyball events, tournaments and websites. He is looking forward to this week’s upcoming event and hopes it won’t be the last. He says his goal is to continue to bring in more tourists and grow the sport throughout the island, but he is looking for support from the TCI Tourist Board. “Without it, this will be our last season here,” Hannemann said.
