 The Turks and Caicos Diabetes Association in honour of the upcoming World Diabetes Day will be offering free sugar testing on Saturday, Nov. 12. Stop by any of the major food stores on Providenciales, including Island Pride, Quality Supermarket, Graceway IGA and Graceway Gourmet, to have your sugar level checked. Early detection and treatment can help lessen the damage caused by this chronic illness. The association has held similar events this week on the islands of South Caicos, Grand Turk, North and Middle Caicos hoping to raise awareness of the disease which ails millions of individuals across the globe. World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14. The WDD campaign is led by the International Diabetes Federation and its member associations. It engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness. Diabetes is a chronic disease that arises when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that enables cells to take in glucose from the blood and use it for energy. Individuals can experience different warning signs, and sometimes there may be no obvious warning, but some of the signs of diabetes are commonly experienced include frequent urination, excessive thirst, increased hunger, weight loss, tiredness, lack of interest and concentration, vomiting and stomach pain (often mistaken as the flu), a tingling sensation or numbness in the hands or feet, blurred vision, frequent infections and slow-healing wounds.
