Chief Executive Martin Stanley was a welcome guest speaker at this month’s Providenciales Chamber of Commerce meeting Nov. 17.

Touching on topics of public sector reform, economic growth and immigration policy, Stanley offered members insight into the interim government’s vision for the future of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Stanley was a lively guest, bringing many questions and comments from the more than two dozen members of the business community in attendance. Members were clearly concerned about how the government planned to draw inward investment and get back to growing the economy.

“We are doing everything to encourage investment,” Stanley told members. While he said there is still a lot to be done, “I really do feel optimistic.”

The chamber has been working to revitalize its member base since a new board was elected earlier this year.

“We are working diligently to bring interesting speakers and events that bring members together,” chamber President Tina Fennimore told members at the opening of the meeting. Meetings with guest speakers are held monthly, and all members of the business community are encouraged to join.

The November meeting got off to somewhat of a late start, due to a protest by local businessman and outspoken radio station owner, Devon Williams. Chamber representatives, at the request of Stanley, did not allow media to record or photograph the meeting, only to take notes and ask questions. Williams said he felt this did not follow with the interim government’s policy of transparency.

The chamber will be hosting its next “After Business” event on Monday, Dec. 13, at 5 p.m. at Jai’s in Grace Bay.
