The Providenciales Chamber of Commerce is working at full steam to improve the environment for businesses in the Turks and Caicos Islands, including its first chamber office.

The chamber celebrated the grand opening Nov. 28 of its office in Grace Bay at Prestigious Place. The office has conference facilities which have already put to good use.

Chamber President Tina Fenimore says she would like to see more organizations joining with the chamber to help move ideas forward that can increase investment and create a better environment for local business owners.

The chamber has already partnered with organizations such as the National Trust and the Tourist Board to work toward common goals.

“The Chamber can be the glue that holds these islands together,” she said. “It is up to us to make this happen.”

The chamber, currently more than 70 members strong, has hopes of reaching 150 members in the coming year.

“The Chamber is a good place to meet, mingle and exchange ideas,” said Fenimore. “It is the only way to really find out what is going on.” And it is not just for businesses.

“We want to encourage anyone who is interested to join,” said Chamber Secretary Wendy Hill. “If you are in business or thinking about getting into business, we can help you.”

To make itself more available to members and potential investors, chamber will keep regular hours two days a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., when interested parties can visit. But Hill and Fenimore noted they are also available by e-mail and telephone every day.

The chamber executive has had meetings in recent weeks with Colin Heartwell, National Insurance Board chief executive; Hugh McGarel-Groves, U.K. advisor and government chief financial officer; and representatives of the U.K. Foundation for Democracy.

The chamber is also working to get interesting and relevant speakers to their monthly meetings. At their November meeting, the chamber hosted an open and frank discussion with government Chief Executive Officer Martin Stanley.

The Providenciales Chamber of Commerce’s next meeting will be Monday, Dec. 10. It is a closed meeting for members only.
