Police Commissioner Colin Farquhar said he has no information to support a claim in an anonymous letter to the governor saying that most police officers want him and his assistant to be removed from power.

During a press conference Nov. 28, Farquhar and Assistant Commissioner Brad Sullivan dismissed the numerous accusations in the letter as unfair and incorrect.

The pair of Royal Canadian Mounted Police veteran officers were brought here in April to make much needed improvements in the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, which has been undermanned, underfunded and often criticized for ineffectiveness and corruption.

So far in their two-year stint here, the top cops have made changes to ensure integrity in their ranks and to improve investigations, court case preparation, evidence handling and police visibility. The latter was said to be unpopular especially on Grand Turk where more officers were recently put on foot patrol.

Also since the Mounties’ arrival, four police officers have been suspended and charged with crimes: an off-duty officer on Grand Turk charged with rape, a police constable working as a 911 operator charged with handling stolen goods on Providenciales, an officer charged with theft on South Caicos and an officer charged with having sexual relations with a minor on Providenciales.
