The history-filled sport of cricket has made an appearance on the lawns of a Providenciales primary schools recently and has already proven to be a big hit with the young players. The students from the Ashcroft School recently completed an intensive nine-week training program to teach them the tricks of the trade. The sporty students were taught all aspects of the game from batting and bowling, to fielding and wicket keeping. Their coach, Paul Baker, is now hoping to arrange a few games for the Ashcroft School’s newest sports team. “The program has proved very successful, and we have unearthed some great talent amongst the Ashcroft guys,” Baker said. “They have all worked very hard but also had a great deal of fun, which is what cricket at this age is all about. “Hopefully we can start arranging some games between different schools across the TCI, and I have no doubt some of these youngsters will go on to represent the TCI in the future.” One of the players, 10-year-old Manuel Soler, said that cricket was now his favorite sport. “I had never played cricket before,” he said, “but now I love it. There are so many aspects to the sport, and I have really enjoyed the sessions.” Cricket, with its code of laws, has always been regarded as a strong moral educator, and youngsters participating in the training program develop sportsmanship, life skills, decision making skills, respect for authority and most of all respect for their fellow players. Cricket is an ideal sport for all ages and abilities, apart from the obvious benefits of sporting activity, such as improving hand-eye coordination and increased physical fitness. Cricket also has a strong strategy and thinking aspect. The game of cricket was first played in southern England in the 16th century. By the end of the 18th century, it had developed into the national sport of England. The expansion of the British Empire led to cricket being played overseas, and by the mid-19th century the first international matches were being held.
