![]() A team of young Providenciales hockey players enjoyed the treat of a lifetime recently when they were given a training session by one of Canada’s finest. The Gansevoort Gators, who play in the Provo Hockey League (PHL), met National Hockey League superstar Matt Bradley as he put the youngsters through their paces at the Graceway Sports Centre, just before a game with Grace Bay Car Rental Owls and Sail Rock Lobsters. Bradley, a Florida Panthers winger, was vacationing in the Turks and Caicos Islands with his family, was invited to watch the games by Gators co-coach, Donny Scholar. But Bradley decided to do more than just sit and view the action. “Donny is old friend of mine. and when he said the Gators were playing, I was delighted to get involved,” Bradley said. “I had a fantastic afternoon with the lads, and there is certainly some real hockey talent here in the TCI. “For a small country, there is a big hockey scene here, and what the organizers of the PHL and sponsors such as the Gansevoort Hotel have done here is very impressive. And what really pleased me was seeing how multi-cultural it is with youngsters from the TCI, Canada, America, England, Bahamas and many other countries all playing together, side by side and having a great time. “As a professional hockey player, I am always glad to help out and do what i can for the youngsters. I am very lucky to play hockey for a living, but I remember well when I was a kid in Canada playing in junior leagues such as the PHL and how much fun I used to have. And that is always my message to children — have fun. There is so much money and big business in sport these days and often the true meaning gets lost. “My advice to all young players is to enjoy their sport and have lots of fun. I wish the Gators and everyone involved in the PHL success and I look forward to coming back and seeing their progress in the future.” Bradley, whose previous teams include San Jose Sharks and Washington Capitals, made a big impression on the Gators’ starlets. “Meeting Matt was awesome,” said six-year-old Zachary Scholar. “He taught us lots of new tricks, and we had a great time working with him.” Bradley’s influence was there for all to see with the Gators recording a 7-6 victory over the Lobsters before drawing 6-6 with the Owls.
