The Provo Golf Club saw the revival of the once popular golf tournament, the Captains Cup, when Bill Confer gathered 24 of Provo’s best golfers and divided them into two teams based on their age. The youngsters were as old as 47, and the “oldsters” were 48 and older. Confer led the oldsters in the match play event that featured the teams in a clash on Saturday, with four balls ending all square at 3-3. The afternoon alternate shot foursomes, then swung the first day total in the favor of the oldsters as they returned a 3½-2½ second round result to give the captain’s side a 6½-5½ advantage. Sunday saw 12 singles points up for grabs as the Bud Light-sponsored oldsters jumped out to an early lead in the first few matches. As the single matches progressed, the Heineken-backed youngsters began to stage a comeback but ultimately fell just short. In the end it was the oldsters who emerged triumphant, winning the singles 7-5 and claiming the silverware 13½-10½. “Yet again we are celebrating a fantastic event with good sportsmanship, great golf and camaraderie shining through,” said Provo Golf Club Director David Douglas. “I’d like to thank everyone who took part and helped Bill Confer realize his dream of bringing the competition back, and well done to Bill himself for all his hard work and effort — and particular thanks for the steak dinner he treated everyone to afterwards.” The organizers sent a special thanks to event sponsors the Wine Cellar, Graceway Trading, Heineken, Bud Light and to Fairways Steakhouse and its staff.
