The Turks and Caicos Islands Rugby Federation Union is excited for the continued growth of the girls rugby program. The fun and dynamic sport was introduced in 2011 to females ranging from ages 8-18 by Sandra Shaw and Keith Burant. The TCIRFU and its volunteers are dedicated to continuing to focus on growing the team and its players’ skills. “The focus of our earlier sessions has been to improve on our players’ passing and catching skills with an oval ball, something that is harder than it sounds when most of us are used to catching round balls,” said Shaw, team organizer. “The girls have improved so much in a short period of time and have successfully mastered non-contact tag rugby.” “Women’s rugby is an area that is getting a lot of attention in the Caribbean region, and we want to harness that attention and grow the sport here,” Burant said. “Rugby is a great test that requires speed, strength and skill to succeed.” Burant also told the fp that the introduction of girl’s rugby was a great success in 2011, and the TCIRFU hopes that it will continue to grow in 2012. The 2012 girls rugby season will be launched on Feb. 11 at 10:30 a.m. with a registration day and barbecue at the Meridian Field in the Village at Grace Bay. Female players can also stay and watch the Under 19s teams play in league matches during the day. New players are always welcome.
