The organizers of the popular annual Race for the Conch EcoSeaSwim are getting ready for the 3rd exciting “Race for the Conch” competition. Founded by water enthusiasts and island residents, Ben Stubenberg and Chloe Zimmermann, the challenge will feature a one-mile and 2.4-mile swimming race July 7 that will start and finish at the Flamingo Café, located on Grace Bay beach. “We are extremely pleased with the level of sponsorship from local businesses small and large,” said Zimmermann. Although the race has predominantly attracted strong support among local swimmers, this year’s event will bring in several international elite swimmers, including reigning champion Marcus Diaz from the Dominican Republic. Diaz won the last two competitions and will be back to defend his title against other top master swimmers from the U.S., U.K., Trinidad and the Dominican Republic. In conjunction with the swim race, a designated open water swim training zone will be set up by Caicu Naniki Ltd. in Grace Bay to help swimmers get their swimming legs on. “Almost all swimmers and triathletes in the U.S., Canada and Europe train in pools and never get a chance to practice their skills in open water settings until race day,” says Stubenberg. “A designated swim zone will allow these athletes and others testing out the waters to train while they are on vacation.” Caicu Naniki will also be offering several additional training programs such as “Swim Safaris” and swim clinics. The “Swim Safari” is set up to assist swimmers in improving their swim techniques and endurance in open water challenges by swimming alongside a coaching boat. Professional swim clinic will also be offered the day before the race to provide swimmers a formal, videotaped training session by top Master Swimming coach Clay Britt. Event proceeds will benefit Providenciales and Haitian charities, as well as a reef fund to protect and enhance marine life. Register for the race and clinic at Marco Travel in Graceway Plaza, Leeward Highway. For more information, visit www.ecoseaswim.com or call 432-5000.
