![]() The Ministry of Health and Human Services in partnership with the Immigration Department and the National Health Insurance Board launched the Migrant Health Evaluation Program (MHEP) effective from April 2. All new applicants for work permits must now obtain a Certificate of Good Health. Previously, the only requirement was a blood test. “It has long been recognized that there was a need for a more comprehensive health evaluation for persons wishing to work within the Turks and Caicos Islands,” the Ministry of Health and Human Services said in a press statement. “This stems from a need to ensure a healthy migrant work force and also to protect the population of the TCI from various communicable diseases. The aim of the MHEP is to screen all applicants for severe chronic illnesses or infectious diseases which may prove costly to the TCI health care system and may threaten the health of the resident population.” Any registered physician in the TCI or internationally can perform the evaluation, which consists of basic blood and radiological tests and a physical examination. The cost is approximately $220 for adults and $90 per child under the age of 15, but additional tests may be required. The certificates, which will be good for three years, will be issued by the Ministry of Health through the NHIB, which will charge a $20 fee. Evaluation forms are available for download on the NHIB website at www.tcinhip.tc in the Updates section and on the Immigration website at www.immigrationboard.tc.
