Sports Centre, Star Foundation host free squash clinic
Thursday, 10 May 2012 09:02

The Graceway Sports Centre and the Turks and Caicos Star Foundation will be welcoming two of the world’s best squash players to teach residents the fundamentals of the high intensity sport.

The free squash clinics will be open to all ages and runs from May 21-25.

Squash pros Niamat and Naji Khan hail from a long line of squash playing lineage that make up the world famous “Khan Dynasty of Squash.” The Khan family has dominated the sport for decades and has won more championships titles than any family in any sport in history, including the prestigious British Open and North American Open titles.

The Khan brothers have each played professional squash for more than 25 years and now devote their time to teaching beginners and juniors, coaching advanced players, and developing squash programs.

In order to participate in the free lessons, interested players must either rent out the courts on a per hour basis or hold a monthly membership at the Sports Centre.

On May 25 starting at 5 p.m., the Sports Centre will host a fundraiser for the Star Foundation where officials will present the organizations upcoming community enriching projects and goals.

The Star Foundation is made up of two foundations, one based in the TCI and one in the U.S. According to its founder, long-time resident Charlotte D’Arcy Donaldson, the sister foundations came about as the result of a unique collaborative effort of Turks and Caicos Islanders, expatriates and visitors united in their desire to improve the lives of future generations in the TCI.

The foundation’s goal is to preserve TCI cultural and historical heritage and the pristine environment of the islands.

The foundation hopes to be a one-stop shop for fundraising efforts in the TCI. It will then distribute the funds to the organizations or individuals that need it most.

Those donating funds to the organization will have the option to make an unrestricted donation or make a direct donation to arts, health, wildlife, education or environment.

The umbrella concept of the duel model charity is to collect funds and allow other TCI organizations to spend more time operating their organizations rather than having to concentrate on fundraising.

Proceeds from the week’s concession sales will go to Star Foundation charitable projects. Donations will also be accepted on behalf of the charity. U.S. citizens can receive a tax deduction for their donations.
