The interim government is looking for a new permanent secretary to lead its largest ministry — the Ministry of Health and Education. The position was filled in March by Judith Campbell, but she decided in April not take up the post. Desiree Lewis has been acting permanent secretary since Campbell’s resignation. Lewis was chosen in March to serve as a deputy secretary under Campbell. The government also announced it was seeking a second deputy secretary for the same ministry. That deputy will report directly to the permanent secretary for the ministry accounts for approximately half of all government spending on services to residents. Interested persons for either position have just about a week to get in their applications before the midnight deadline on July 8. A recruitment process began earlier this year for 14 deputy secretaries to work underneath the newly appointed five permanent secretaries. Boyle announced March 9 the new permanent secretaries were only able to find six of the 14 deputies they need to run their new ministries beginning April 1, at which time a new recruitment process was to begin. Deputies will be paid an annual salary of $68,000, minus the 10-percent pay cut all civil servants have been under since April 2010, according to the job requirements. The only regular expense or allowance will be one weekly round trip from Providenciales to Grand Turk, where most will work. “No other benefits or allowances or vehicles etc. will be made available,” the job requirements state.
