The People’s Democratic Movement’s five candidates for nationwide at-large seats in the House of Assembly include three veteran government ministers and two well-known women.

Former chief minister and party Leader Oswald Skippings will be joined on the ticket by former chief minister Derek Taylor and former minister Samuel Harvey.

Attorney Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson, who is deputy party leader, is a former member of the Consultative Forum and Legislative Council, among service on numerous other commissions and committees over the years.

Making her first appearance for elected office is businesswoman Josephine Connolly, whose enterprises include Tropical Auto Rentals, Connolly Motors Ltd., Connolly Zahm Properties Ltd. and Connolly Productions.

Skippings said the team of candidates “reflects a diversity of persons coming from throughout the islands with a variety of experience and leadership skills. These persons have a patriotic passion for their country and people.”

Robinson said the PDM candidates embodied “sober, mature, proven leadership” that would take the country in the right direction, “not recklessly full-steam ahead but steady as she goes.”

After candidates were announced July 23 at party headquarters on Providenciales, Skippings addressed some of what he called “pressing issues.”

He vowed to end the hospital contract with InterHealth Canada, calling it a “prostitute deal” that “appears to be deliberately and disingenuously designed to bilk the public and the TCI government out of tens of millions of dollars annually.”

A PDM administration would take legal action to undo the contract or pay the $125 million penalty to void the contract, an amount cheaper than $80 million a year the government has been paying InterHealth.

Skippings reiterated that the PDM supports the business community in opposing value-added taxes, saying the interim administration should leave that decision to an elected government.

As for the proposed 28-story hotel/convention center for Grace Bay, Skippings called it “a great project overall,” but said it is “too complicated an issue to be undertaken by the interim administration and elections being just three months away, it is something that an elected government should take under its wings.”

Skippings said the PDM would be announcing its full platform in the coming weeks. Candidates for the 10 constituent districts will be named after the Electoral Boundary Commission completes its redrawing of the former 15 districts into 10.
