Typically, children look forward to the summer months because they are free from going to school, doing homework, taking tests, waking up early etc.
However, if your child is behind in any academic area, summer vacation provides a great opportunity to help him or her gain the skills necessary to be successful during the upcoming school year. For those children who are behind in their studies, any of the following may be helpful. 1. Obtain an outline from your child’s school of what the next grade level will present. Having an outline will allow your son or daughter extra time to familiarize him or herself with materials that will be covered the following year decreasing the possibility of falling further behind. 2. Prepare a summer schedule – purchase workbooks from the book store corresponding to your child’s age and academic level. These books should be in a variety of subject areas, more importantly, the areas your child has the most trouble in. I realize that many of us may have very full schedules. It is important however, to allow time to help children review their work. If this is not possible, I recommend seeking the assistance of other family members, friends or a tutor. Even if your child has not fallen behind in his or her studies, he or she will benefit by engaging in mind stimulating activities this summer as well. Consider the following: 1. Compile a summer reading list capitalizing on your child’s interest. Allot a certain amount of time for completion of each book followed by journal entries. 2. Visit the book store and purchase workbooks on a variety of subjects (for the grade level your child will be entering). This will allow your child to become familiar with the work he or she will be doing when the new school year begins. It is not uncommon for teachers to have to spend a month or more re-teaching material from the previous school year, which students have forgotten over the summer months. If we want our children to stay ahead in school, this summer is the perfect time to halt the summer slide that may have plagued them for years. We do not need to create a strict regime for them to follow unless they are behind terribly. Summer break is a time to have a hiatus and renew from a year of presumably, hard work. While this is so, children must know that they are to be responsible following through on tasks and staying focused on their educational development.
