5th Annual Dog Show PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Wagging tails and classic potcake grins were everywhere under the big tent at Turtle Cove Marina for the 5th annual TCSPCA Dog Show on Saturday, June 27th. The Festival of the Wagging Tails has become a hugely popular event for kids of all ages and their dogs, and provides much needed funding for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

In addition to the eight events in which our four legged companions competed, there were doggie and people items for sale, ranging from collars to T-shirts to jewelery, excellent food and drink for sale at the Aqua Restaurant Corner and fabulous raffle prizes to be won. Ambergris Cay’s Turks & Caicos Sporting Club donated the first prize in this year’s raffle – a day out to explore the private island.

From 1 pm until the final trophy for Best in Show was awarded to Devina, owned and shown by Donald Astwood, emcee Louise Henderson kept the crowds entertained and the show on track. Louise is a long time volunteer at the TCSPCA who’s show biz flair is a key to the Dog Show’s growing success.

The four judges this year were Eddinton Powell, owner of two potcakes and President and CEO of PPC Ltd., the Main Sponsor this year, Allison Capron, new owner of a potcake pup and news woman/ anchor person on WIV Channel 4, Donna Doran, owner of Pampered Paws boarding/training kennel and Peggy Perkins, from Turks & Caicos Veterinary Associates. They had the difficult and fun task of deciding winners.

Several canine contestants seemed to understand their role and shamelessly curried favour by approaching the judges’ table and attempting to get up close and personal.

A highlight of the show is the Obstacle Course which provides challenge and humour. The Tunnel of Love proved too scary for many contestants but the finale, through the Jaws of Death was a piece of cake for most. Owners who’s dog failed to complete the course were given the option of running it themselves. None opted to do so.

Perhaps the most popular event for the crowds is the “Looks Most Like Owner” category. Young Jackie in her pink dress, accompanied by Jake in matching pink tutu were the hands down favourites. Jake also took third place dressed in hat and shorts to match his other young owner, Joseph.

This year’s show and pre-show sales raised more than $25,000.00 for the TCSPCA, which is a whopping five grand more than last year. Eighty-five new members came on board and if you forgot to sign up, new memberships can be had, year round, for just $25.00. Just drop into the TCSPCA Office/Clinic in Suzy Turn Plaza between nine and five, Monday to Friday. T-Shirts and all kinds of pet items are for sale there, year round.

These monies will help cover the expenses of the TCSPCA Spay/Neuter Clinic, which helps to prevent the births of thousands of unwanted animals each year and the Foster/Adoption program, which saves the lives of hundreds of puppies annually.

TCSPCA Director Susan Blehr and her wonderful gang of steadfast volunteers do such a great job year round, that they have no trouble convincing sponsors to support the show. Graceway IGA and Pedigree Dog food have been Main Sponsors for several years and they were on board once again. Turtle Cove Marina has always donated the use of their big white tent and the marina grounds for the event. If you would like to add your support to the TCSPCA, they are now booking sponsorships for their annual calendar.

And for the next twelve months the following dogs are the reigning kings and queens of Provo’s dog world:
