As part of their final fund raising efforts, the Turks and Caicos Islands Golf Association (TCIGA) held a “Kickoff” Charity Golf Scramble this past weekend. The event was dampened, literally, when rain began to fall and did not let up. However, TCI golfers didn’t let that stop them from raising $4,600 towards this coming week’s tournament.
The “kickoff” Charity Golf Scramble saw tough weather conditions turn into a virtual wall of water after only 3 holes of the scramble golf format. The play was delayed and then quickly cancelled as the rain would not allow course conditions to return to playability. Plan “B” then went into effect with a party breaking out in the Fairway’s Bar & Grill while players dried off, joined in, and drew lots for all prizes. Many of the golfers stayed for hours to celebrate the upcoming, 53rd Annual Bordier Bank Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships that will begin next week. The Turks and Caicos Islands Golf Association, TCIGA, is a part of a Caribbean golf association which puts on the tournament each year in a different country. 10 countries in the Caribbean including the Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Jamaica , O.E.C.S, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos, US Virgin Islands participate in the association. The 53rd annual Bordier International Bank Caribbean Golf Championship is to be held this year at the Provo Golf Club from August 1st to August 7th Sponsored by Bordier International Bank & Trust Ltd, who have signed up to be the headline sponsor of this prestigious event, this is the largest annual golf event in this region and the biggest sporting event to come to the Turks and Caicos this year. In 1957 only 2 countries took part in the tournament, but now ten teams including the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago and Cayman Islands will be arriving on our shores, with Puerto Rico looking to retain the cup they won in 2008 in the Cayman Islands. Each county will send a 14 person team who will be competing over the 4 days of competitive golf in 5 separate divisions. The 53rd Caribbean Open will be managed by the Turks and Caicos Golf Association. John Phillips, Tournament Director of the TCIGA commented, “we are very pleased to be involved, as this is a fabulous opportunity to showcase the country and the TCI’s very supportive corporate community”.
